An essential element for human well-being. This is how Martine Duclos, president of the National Observatory of Physical Activity and Sedentary Lifestyle (Onaps), sports doctor and physiologist, defines physical activity. According to her, sport allows you to be healthy and considerably reduce stress and anxiety.

Why is sport so important for mental health?

MARTINE DUCLOS. It is a factor in preventing anxiety and depression. Very good studies have shown, particularly among adolescents, that physical activity started around the age of 10 helps reduce the risk of anxiety disorders and depression until adulthood, and it is the same thing in adults. The effects on psychosocial health are also very important. Playing sports also allows you to create connections with other people, to get out of the house, to increase self-esteem and a feeling of self-efficacy. We realize that we are capable of doing things and progressing.

More broadly, sport is good for your health…

If you are better in your body, you are better in your head, and if you are better in your head, you are better in your body. By practicing regular physical activity, we enter into a virtuous circle which improves all parameters and helps reduce risk factors. The quality of sleep also improves.

Can we talk about sport as an antidepressant?

Yes, it’s an antidepressant. Physical activity has a considerable effect on stress. After a session, you feel much better, you have been able to eliminate stress, you have spent psychological energy which is in the process of draining the rest of your energy. Sport soothes you and it also allows you to better manage other episodes of stress later.

What advice would you give to people who don’t yet practice physical activity?

You have to listen to your body but above all be aware that sport is accessible to everyone, whatever the age, whatever the state of health! The effort does not necessarily have to be very intense right away. Find something you like and, once you’ve decided to get started, take it gradually. You risk tiring yourself out or even injuring yourself. If you have risk factors, or are afraid, discuss them with your doctor who will explain all the benefits of the practice. If you have a chronic illness or treatment, do not hesitate to contact a sports-health center, in order to be accompanied by a professional who will prepare a tailor-made program for you.
