Did we witness one of the toughest Grand Prix of the year? According to the drivers on the grid, yes, but not necessarily because of the Lusail track in Qatar. Due to oppressive heat and humidity – it was 32 degrees at the start of the race this Sunday evening – some drivers had some physical problems during the race.

This is particularly the case of Esteban Ocon. The Alpine driver revealed on the radio that he had vomited during the race. “I have to tell you that I vomited on the 15th lap,” he announced on the radio between two tactical instructions. An incident which did not prevent him from finishing the Grand Prix in a good seventh place. The 27-year-old Frenchman later explained on Instagram that it was about “the most complicated race of [sa] career “.

“We are losing so much water…”

Other pilots complained of health concerns. Logan Sargeant (Williams) ended up withdrawing after warning his team several times that he was not feeling well. Still at Williams, Alex Albon had great difficulty getting out of his car, and remained seated for several minutes, exhausted, next to his seat. In the middle of the race, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) asked to be doused with water at the next pit stop because his seat was burning. At the end of the 57 laps, Lando Norris (McLaren) was on the verge of fainting before heading straight towards the ambulance.

“There are two drivers who are really not good, all the others who are relatively not good,” summarized Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) at the microphone of Canal +. It’s not because of the physical conditions because we’re not muscularly tired but we can’t hydrate ourselves, we lose so much water, there was heat… Something crazy! It was really really complicated. »

Climatic conditions which disturbed Max Verstappen much less, winner this Sunday evening, and already crowned in Qatar with a third consecutive world champion title.
