It was a report from an individual which allowed the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of the Grand-Est to carry out an excavation site on this field located in the town of Courcy, very close to Reims (Marne). Six remains of soldiers were then discovered in a hollow. Supervised by the National Office for Veterans and Victims of War (Onac-VG), the search for nationality was launched as soon as the bodies were discovered last September. Parts of a uniform, boots and a helmet were all clues to finding their country of origin. These soldiers are now known to belong to the Imperial Russian Army of the First World War. They all wore their identification tags which will also allow them to find their families.

Analyzes in Lorraine

The remains are currently being assessed and in the hands of an anthropologist, in the Onac-VG laboratory in Metz (Lorraine). At the end of this analysis, the bodies will be buried in the Russian military cemetery of Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand (Marne). In this necropolis rest nearly 1000 Russian fighters who fell during the world conflict. Remember that on September 20, this Russian necropolis was in the spotlight: it was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, along with 139 other funerary and memorial sites.
