He will never face a criminal trial for the charges he faced. American gynecologist George Tyndall was found dead at his home in California (United States) on Wednesday, his lawyer Leonard Levine announced to the agency on Thursday AP. The man was to be tried on nearly 29 counts of “sexually abusive behavior” for acts committed between 2009 and 2016 at the student health center of the University of Southern California, to which he depended.

The man was found deceased at his home by a friend, who was worried about not being able to reach him on the phone. Los Angeles police responded to the scene and the doctor, who was 76 years old, appeared to have died of natural causes. Nearby Los Angeles Timesa forensic pathologist confirmed that no autopsy would be performed.

“I was afraid we would never get justice”

When he was indicted in 2019, he pleaded not guilty and was released on bail pending his trial, the date of which had not yet been set. He had been a gynecologist at the university for nearly 30 years before being fired in 2017, reports CNN. Eighteen counts relate to sexual assault, the other eleven to “sexual violence”.

Lucy Chi, a former patient of George Tyndall, lamented a new shock for her and the other victims. “I am so disappointed. I was afraid for five years, since the case came out, that we would never get justice,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

A record civil amount for the university

Sued for its inaction, the University of Southern California (Southern California) paid a record civil sum of $1.1 billion, which then represented 935 million euros. These civil suits were filed by 710 former patients of George Tyndall, for acts sometimes dating back to the 1980s.

The victims’ attorneys said it was the “largest sexual abuse settlement against a university and the largest personal injury settlement against a university in history.”
