A new book titled “The Giant” has been published to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Mahmoud Morsi, a renowned Egyptian actor. The book, written by Dr. Walid Saif, explores Morsi’s career and his unique contributions to Egyptian cinema, theater, television, and radio. Morsi, often referred to as a master of the art of acting, is celebrated for his exceptional performances and the richness of his artistic experience.

Morsi, born in 1923 and passed away in 2004, enjoyed a successful career spanning over half a century. Despite his fame, he remained a private individual, rarely giving interviews or sharing details about his personal life. However, fans are aware of his marriage to fellow artist Samiha Ayoub and their son Dr. Alaa, who is an artist and psychiatrist.

The book delves into Morsi’s early life, highlighting the impact of his parents’ separation on his upbringing. Sent to boarding school and only permitted to see his mother twice a week, Morsi’s childhood experiences influenced his artistic journey. As a high school student, he unexpectedly found himself starring in a play, which marked the beginning of his acting career.

After working as a teacher for five years, Morsi sold his house and traveled to France to study directing at the Institute of Higher Cinematographic Studies. He enjoyed success as a director and actor on French radio but was forced to leave France during the tripartite aggression against Egypt in 1956. Morsi expressed his patriotism by refusing to remain in a country that had attacked his homeland. He returned to Egypt and embarked on a career as a radio director before being offered his first cinematic role by director Niazi Mostafa.

Despite initially not intending to pursue acting, Morsi found himself drawn to the profession repeatedly throughout his life. He displayed remarkable talent and versatility in his performances, continually impressing audiences. The author of “The Giant” describes Morsi’s success in his role in the movie “I Am the Fugitive” as the turning point that allowed him to break free from being typecast into evil roles. Morsi went on to portray various characters in notable films such as “The Rebellious,” “The Open Door,” and “The Last Night.” The latter, a film opposite Faten Hamama, showcased Morsi’s commitment to his craft and his ability to convey emotion through silence and expression.

Throughout his cinematic career, Morsi appeared in 25 films, with six of his works making it onto the list of the 100 best Egyptian films of the twentieth century. Remarkably, he maintained a consistently high level of quality in his film choices, avoiding weak or poorly-received projects.

In addition to his film work, Morsi also made significant contributions to the Institutes of Cinema and Theater Arts, teaching aspiring actors and directors. He served as the director of the National Theater and translated renowned international works, including Stanislavsky’s “Preparing the Actor.”

“The Giant” explores Morsi’s impact beyond the silver screen, delving into his television career, which began in the late sixties. Memorable television series such as “Zeinab and the Throne,” “The Journey of Mr. Abu El-Ela Al-Bishri,” and “The Bird of Fire” solidified Morsi’s status as a beloved and influential figure in Egyptian entertainment. Sadly, he passed away while filming his final work, the series “Summer Glow” in 2004.

The publication of “The Giant” coincides with the Alexandria Film Festival’s celebration of Mahmoud Morsi during its 39th session. Through analyzing his exceptional performances and revealing the nuances of his artistic prowess, the book preserves and honors the legacy of this iconic actor, whose talents have shaped and enriched Egyptian cinema.]
