Title: Jerusalem Comes Together in Massive Blood Drive to Support Terror Victims

Date: October 10, 2023

Jerusalem’s Pais Arena stadium witnessed an incredible display of unity on Monday as people from all walks of life patiently lined up for hours to donate blood to help the victims of the recent Hamas terror attack. The blood drive, organized by Magen David Adom (MDA), attracted a diverse crowd that included secular teens, yeshiva boys, worried mothers, and Christian pilgrims.

Following the devastating attack that claimed the lives of over 900 Israelis, including hundreds of civilians, and left thousands injured, the need for blood donations was critical. Hospitals in Israel were treating around 2,300 injured patients as of Monday. In an extraordinary act of solidarity, Israelis of all backgrounds came together to do their part in supporting the victims.

MDA had initially turned away donors the previous day due to the overwhelming response. However, they successfully relocated the blood drive to the larger Pais Arena stadium. The venue, which had previously hosted mass COVID vaccinations in 2021, provided ample space and accommodations for the massive turnout.

Under the guidance of over 150 MDA staff, including volunteers, the blood drive operated smoothly. Volunteers helped donors with paperwork and distributed refreshments to those waiting in line. Grape juice drinks were provided to donors after they gave blood.

Donated blood was transported to the Tel Hashomer hospital lab and then to a newly established blood bank in Ramle. The blood was separated into three parts, with each portion capable of supporting three patients. MDA called for nationwide blood donations to treat the victims. Thousands of units of blood had already been donated, and another blood drive was scheduled for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The profound determination of the donors was evident as they shared their stories. Aliza Klieman-Marriot spent four hours at the blood drive on Sunday, only to be turned away. Undeterred, she returned with her husband on Monday, spending a total of eight hours to complete the process. Three teenagers, Itamar Greenberg, Avi Weiss, and Eli Wittenstein, spent a combined 14 hours at the blood drive, entertaining fellow donors with games, songs, and their guitar.

The spirit of perseverance and resilience extended even to those who faced challenges getting to the drive. Malka Kirschenbaum and her brother traveled from the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Ramot Eshkol, enduring hours on less frequent bus schedules. Shaul, standing in line with the Davidkins, expressed his determination to do what he could to support the victims of the attack.

As the blood drive continued, a siren suddenly sounded, signaling an incoming rocket. MDA staff quickly ushered everyone inside the arena, ensuring their safety. Despite the tense situation, the unyielding spirit and unity of the Israeli people remained evident.

The blood donated during this massive drive will be critical in saving lives and supporting the recovery of the victims. This extraordinary display of unity and determination serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Jerusalem community and their unwavering commitment to supporting one another in times of crisis.
