More than half of French people consider that La France insoumise is dangerous for democracy, ahead of the National Rally whose image is constantly improving, according to a survey published Tuesday.

According to 57% of French people think that LFI is dangerous for democracy compared to 52% for the RN, according to the annual survey “French Fractures” Ipsos/Sopra Steria for Le Monde, Cevipof, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation and the Montaigne Institute.

The increasingly positive perception of the RN

The party of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, which is continuing its institutionalization strategy, benefits from an increasingly positive judgment among those surveyed. Thus, 61% thought that the RN was dangerous for democracy in 2020, then 56% in 2021 and 54% in 2022. The party appears to fewer and fewer French people as dangerous for democracy.

The RN is also seen as increasingly able to govern the country: 44% of French people questioned consider them ready, an increase compared to last year (39%) or even compared to 2020 (32% ). On this question, LFI peaks at 28%, and only Les Républicains do better (48%).

The party renamed the National Rally in 2018 is perceived as far-right by 66% of French people (-4 pts compared to 2022), and as xenophobic by 50% (-2 pts). And it is seen as close to the concerns of the French by 40% of respondents, or 3 points better than a year ago.

LFI considered as a party “which fuels violence”

Unlike the RN, the image of LFI is deteriorating. Asked whether La France insoumise would be a party “which fuels violence”, 60% of French people answered “yes” compared to 52% for the far-right party.

Furthermore, almost one in two French people (45%) today say they feel they belong to “a France that is angry and very anti-establishment”, i.e. 9 points more than last year, a figure that is up sharply. . The feeling of “a France in decline” is also facing a significant increase, with more than 4 out of 5 French people sharing this idea (82% of French people worried, + 7 points). The survey underlines that this pessimistic feeling in society is not new and is at a comparable level, at the end of François Hollande’s five-year term in 2016. In total, 86% of fellow citizens then reported this state. of mind in this same investigation.

The Ipsos/Sopra Steria poll was carried out online from September 15 to 18, before the Hamas attack on Israel and LFI’s polemical comments on this conflict. It was carried out on a sample of 1,500 people representative of French adults using the quota method, is part of an annual survey entitled “French Fractures” on the opinion of the French on the state of society, their values ​​and their perception of the major political forces.
