The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that in 2021, one in seven young people between 10 and 19 years old suffered from a mental condition, with depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders being the main causes of illness and disability among teenagers. These conditions not only affect your present, but can also restrict your opportunities for a fulfilling life in the future.

It is crucial to make this problem visible and generate preventive and mitigation actions. Mental health is defined as the state in which a person feels integrated and balanced, capable of enjoying everyday life, including attitudes of service to others and relationships of brotherhood.

At La Salle University, aware of their mission, they have established within their educational model, for more than 30 years, strategies to offer their students an environment conducive to their comprehensive training. Its comprehensive training program consists of six coordinations that make up the Vice-Rector’s Office for Welfare and Training. These coordinations provide options to develop habits, skills, abilities and values, as well as opportunities for fraternal interaction, contributing to the well-being of students, teachers and collaborators, to face the environmental conditions together.

The key to ensuring students’ mental health, according to The Guardian, is to reduce the stressors caused by university life and help them structure their lives to promote their mental well-being.

The team of the Coordination of Student Life and Impulse (CIVE) of La Salle University designs strategies and services to achieve the physical and mental health of people, strengthen character and promote university well-being. Through a process that includes the identification of needs and risk populations, preventive, care and monitoring actions are implemented.

During their academic journey, students are accompanied by mutual aid groups, workshops, prevention campaigns, pedagogical guidance, psychological guidance, medical care and attention to crises and emergencies. The CIVE has a team of 26 specialists in areas such as Psychology, Nutrition, Medicine and Pedagogy. It provides the university community with a safe and judgment-free space where they are supported to identify the causes of their concerns and are provided with support tools for managing stress and anxiety. If necessary, they are referred to health services for a complete assessment that allows them to find a way out of their situation.

The problem of mental health is an issue in which all people must take action. In the case of educational institutions, it is vital to guarantee good treatment, active listening, flexibility and effectiveness in academic and administrative processes, taking advantage of the use of prevention and care technologies. It is everyone’s responsibility to analyze the tensions that university life causes in each individual and prioritize well-being in each process that involves the educational community of La Salle University.
