The expedition also piques the interest of mining ventures looking to replenish scarce resources, as well as emergency planners seeking to evaluate potential space detritus that could hit Earth. Psyche’s near-limitless quantities of iron, as indicated by previous observations, make it an attractive prospect for future mining endeavors.

Moreover, Nasa’s increasing focus on asteroids stems from their significance in understanding cosmic history and the threat they pose to Earth. Last year, Nasa successfully tested its deflection technology by crashing a satellite into the asteroid Dimorphos. Recently, the space agency revealed that a sample taken from the asteroid Bennu indicated the presence of water and high-carbon content, hinting at potential clues regarding the building blocks of life on Earth.

The Psyche mission will be carried out using a van-sized satellite launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX on a Falcon Heavy rocket. Nasa’s revolutionary method of solar-powered ion propulsion will be employed beyond the Moon’s orbit, employing Hall thrusters that emit a striking blue glow thanks to xenon gas.

Colin Snodgrass, professor of planetary astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, describes this era as a “golden era” for missions to asteroids. With billions of asteroids yet to be explored, there is a vast trove of knowledge waiting to be uncovered.
