A new player is launching in France in the satellite Internet access niche. The telecoms operator Orange, through its subsidiary Nordnet, will launch an offer “in November” for its French customers who cannot have access to optical fiber in particular, management announced on Wednesday.

Satellite broadband is supposed to serve isolated regions without using terrestrial infrastructure (cable or mobile networks). The objective of a fast Internet connection throughout the country comes up against the exorbitant cost of installing fiber in geographical areas that are difficult to access.

“The Orange satellite with Nordnet will be offered digitally and in all Orange stores and customer services, at a price equivalent to that of an optical fiber offer,” Christel Heydemann, CEO of Orange, had already announced. July.

This service operated by Nordnet, which has 25,000 customers in mainland France, will operate thanks to a partnership concluded with the European operator Eutelsat and its new Konnect VHTS satellite.

The market for high-speed space connectivity in low orbit, estimated at 16 billion dollars (around 14 billion euros) by 2030, is the subject of many appetites. The merger between the operators Eutelsat and OneWeb or the ambitions of major American players, such as the Amazon constellation or the Starlink juggernaut led by Elon Musk, are recent examples.

Starlink is already well positioned in this market

Officially accessible in France since May 2021, the Starlink service of billionaire Elon Musk, boss of Tesla, allows residents of underserved areas to have access to high-speed Internet thanks to thousands of small satellites circulating in low orbit (mainly 550 km altitude) around the Earth.

Starlink has moved ahead of its rivals, establishing itself as one of the world’s leading satellite internet providers, with more than two million customers.
