Due to the booming online trade, the need for personnel in warehouse logistics and packaging technology has increased significantly. This emerges from an analysis presented on Thursday by the Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh. A lot of staff are also still needed in social professions: the foundation’s job monitor counted over 540,000 online job advertisements in the areas of education, emergency services and nursing in 2022 alone. That’s around 7 percent of all job advertisements for the year.
The number of advertisements has increased, particularly in the professional groups of education, social work and curative education. In a ranking, these professions end up in sixth place with over 362,000 requests, after ninth place in 2019.
The job monitor analyzes online job advertisements every month. For this study, around 45 million online job advertisements for 1,210 different professions were analyzed from the beginning of 2019 to June 30, 2023.
Health professions have lost top positions due to the pandemic
The absolute number of requests from health professionals has been increasing since 2021. However, in a direct comparison of all tenders, this area has recently performed worse after a peak during the pandemic. This shows that the increase in advertised positions is even greater in other professional groups. In first place in 2022 will be the area of corporate organization and strategy.

In addition to higher-level professional groups, the job monitor also examines individual professions. Of these, office and secretarial specialists are the most sought-after professions, followed by warehouse assistants. Health and nursing staff come in eighth place, geriatric nursing staff follow in 18th place. Among the biggest risers were specialists in psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as internal medicine.
According to the foundation, the data shows how many workers are needed in which area. However, it is not clear from this how many positions are actually vacant. On average in 2020 and 2021, no other profession lacked as many skilled workers as in geriatric and nursing care.
