Watch out for ‘Lost’ Bags: New Fraud Method Reported in Sweden

It seems that fraudsters in Sweden are constantly finding new ways to deceive the public. From classic phone scams to fake text messages, their methods have become all too common. Now, the police are warning about a new fraud method that involves ‘lost’ bags strategically placed on the ground.

According to a report by TV4, the fraudsters rely on the bags appearing to be lost, attracting the attention of unsuspecting passers-by. Inside the bag, a QR code has been placed that leads to a bitcoin account. The idea is to tempt individuals into thinking they have stumbled upon a hidden treasure. They are then directed to a website where they are prompted to download something to claim their newfound wealth, all without paying any taxes.

Jan Olsson, from the Police’s national IT crime centre, explained the scheme during an interview with TV4’s Nyhetsmorgon. He warned that after scanning the QR code, individuals are often asked to make a payment to access the promised bitcoins. In some cases, they are even asked to provide their card or account details. Unfortunately, instead of receiving any bitcoins, these unsuspecting victims end up losing their hard-earned money.

Olsson also noted that those who scan the QR code are often asked to download something or visit a specific website. This is where the fraudsters inject a virus into the victim’s computer or phone, enabling them to steal personal information and access financial accounts.

In light of these recent events, Jan Olsson and his police colleagues are urging the public to be cautious. If someone comes across a ‘lost’ bag, they are advised to hand it in to the police rather than attempting to claim any possible treasure inside.

As fraudsters continue to evolve their tactics, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and stay informed about the latest scams. By being aware of these fraudulent methods, individuals can protect themselves and their finances from falling victim to these deceitful schemes.
