In the pipeline for several days, the arrival of Albert Riera at the head of the Girondins de Bordeaux until June 2025 was made official on Thursday noon by the club. The 41-year-old former Spanish international (16 caps) officiated in Slovenia, at NK Celje. He is the successor to David Guion, laid off after the defeat against Laval (0-1) on Saturday, and will have to revive the Bordelais, 13th in Ligue 2, ten points from the direct climb.

Riera is a familiar face for Haillan, since he played two seasons for the Girondins, between 2003 and 2005 (66 matches, 9 goals). His playing career then took him to Espanyol, Liverpool, Manchester City and Galatasaray. As a coach, the Spaniard won the Slovenian championship with Olimpija Ljubljana last season and topped the same division with his club NK Celje.

The former left midfielder arrives with two assistants, including Pablo Remon Arteta, the brother of Mikel, Arsenal coach and ex-PSG player. He will manage his first match after the international break in Angers, with the aim of launching the Bordeaux season. Winners three times in ten matches, the Girondins are far from their goal of progress and remain in four matches without winning.
