The free movement of people and goods is struggling to be effective within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). To make this fundamental principle of community space a reality, two digital platforms have been designed to reduce customs hassle for citizens.
Facilitating the mobility of people, goods and services is one of the fundamental pillars of UEMOA. Adopted since May 29, 1979 in Dakar, many obstacles affect this pillar. These include, for example, excessive customs barriers, administrative delays and unnecessary controls at borders and corridors. To break these obstacles, UEMOA has found the solution to be the establishment of two digital platforms intended to eliminate these obstacles.
The first platform (www.disparlerte.uemoa.int) will considerably reduce wasted time during formalities. “The first platform will allow different manufacturers as well as companies to be able to submit their files online to save time and provide transparency in the management of different files,” underlined Jean Bado, one of the consultants who designed the platform.
He specifies that the second (www.pfdofc.uemoa.int) is an extension of the first web application. “Here it will be a question of reporting any obstacle to the free movement of people and goods”, he explained.
Equipping users for proper use
Becoming familiar and familiar with the different tools in order to optimize the use of platforms is a crucial step for good use. Thus, a training workshop was initiated for different actors from several countries in the UEMOA area covering the areas of the common market.
“It is essential that all actors, whether governmental or not, actively participate in this alert mechanism. Citizens and businesses are encouraged to report any obstruction to free movement they encounter,” insisted Georges Anicet Ouedraogo, cabinet director at the regional market and cooperation department, during the opening of the work.
