Amadou Damaro Camara perhaps thought he had gotten out of trouble, he is certainly not at the end of his legal troubles. The former president of the National Assembly may not benefit from his release ordered by the judge, Francis Kova Zoumanigui, on October 9.

Amadou Damaro Camara waited all night at the hospital. The prosecution made him believe that it was getting late and that he would regain his freedom in the early hours of the morning of Tuesday October 10. The special prosecutor’s office at the Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offenses finally decided to appeal to the appeals chamber. Damaro Camaro will therefore remain in detention, at least bedridden at the Sino-Guinean Friendship Hospital until the new hearing.

The special prosecution considers that the arguments it developed when this question of release arose were not taken into account. He is worried about seeing Damaro outside at the risk of him influencing possible witnesses or succeeding in erasing traces that would prove his guilt. But the judge ignored these arguments, considering that at this stage, the defendant could no longer influence the rest of the procedure. He ordered his release, conditional, among other things, on the seizure of his travel documents.

Many people are wondering what happened between Monday evening and Tuesday morning at the special prosecutor’s office. After the judge’s decision, Lazarre Mamadi Bauret, deputy special prosecutor, showed no desire to appeal. He didn’t care about it at all. On the contrary, he had even asked the judge for the written decision, in order to have it executed. He finally invokes article 583 which stipulates that “The detained defendant is kept in prison until the appeal of the public prosecutor has been decided, and in all cases until the expiration of the time limit for this appeal”, to keep him in detention.

The joy of Damaro and his loved ones was therefore short-lived: “We doubted that the special prosecutor and his prosecution were in a crazy game,” reacted one of his lawyers.
