Leonardo lands in Berlin and Madrid: 260 million contracts for aircraft radar

The Italian defense giant will develop new broadband capabilities and supply components for the new radar antenna

Less than twenty-four hours from the signing of theagreement with the Austrian defense for the acquisition of 18 helicopters destined for Vienna (read here to find out more), the Italian tech giant led by Alessandro Profumo announces the signing of contracts for over 260 million euros with Hensoldt, a German multinational active in sensor technologies for protection and surveillance missions in the defense, security and aerospace sectors.

The new partnership will allow the Italian company to have a key role in radar development and delivery scanning electronically – the Ecrs Mk1, which stands for European common radar system Mk1, – of the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft ordered by Germany and Spain.

Specifically, Leonardo will deal with the development of new broadband capabilities and will provide essential components of the new radar antenna, Apsc (Antenna Power Supply & Control) and related processors. Leonardo is already the design authority of the Ecrs Mk0 electronic scanning radar (E-scan) ordered by Kuwait and Qatar, at the basis of the Ecrs Mk1 version, and of the Uk-guided Ecrs Mk2 radar.

Hensoldtinstead, it is design authority of radar Ecrs Mk1, while Airbus Defence & Space takes care of his integration into the Eurofighter. Leonardo, strong of the leadership within the EuroRadar consortium, which produces the Ecrs Mk0, it will provide Hensoldt with the tools to take the helm of the Ecrs Mk1, strengthening Germany’s capabilities in the air combat sector. The close collaboration on this project is representative of the strong partnership between the two leading companies in the field of defense electronics. The first Ecrs Mk1 radar will be produced in 2025.

The realization of the sensor modules will see the involvement of the sites of Nerviano, Edinburgh, Campi Bisenzio and Palermo. Leonardo is also leading the design of the Ecrs Mk2, the new variant with a multi-functional antenna developed in partnership with Bae Systems. The development of the Ecrs Mk2 is financed by the United Kingdom with support from Italy attraverso l’Ecrs Mk2 Industrial Joint Team.
