Norway condemns ‘unacceptable’ siege of Gaza Strip

Norway condemned the siege on Friday “unacceptable” of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli army, after the deadly assault launched on Saturday by Hamas.

“Israel has the right to defend itself (…) but they cannot resort to all possible means” and imaginable, declared the head of Norwegian diplomacy, Anniken Huitfeldt, on public radio NRK. “I condemn this blockade because it is necessary (to do it) when they ask so many people to move, when (these people) do not have access to food and medicine”she added.

After the October 7 attack which left more than a thousand dead on its territory, Israel decreed a “full seat” of the Gaza Strip, already under land, air and sea blockade for 16 years.

On Friday, the Jewish state ordered the evacuation, within 24 hours, of “all civilians” from the north of the Gaza Strip to the south, or around 1.1 million people, according to the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric.

“The establishment of a total blockade, including on access to electricity, water, food and other goods essential to the survival of the civilian population in Gaza is unacceptable”Ms. Huitfeldt had already reacted in a press release Thursday evening.

Oslo condemned the attacks committed by the Palestinian Islamist movement. Breaking with the traditional line which consists of adopting the list of terrorist organizations drawn up by the UN, on which Hamas does not appear, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Wednesday described the movement as“terrorist organization”. “An organization that planned, carried out and claimed responsibility for such terrorist acts must be able to be considered a terrorist organization. And that’s all “he said in front of Parliament.
