The problem of second homes also affects the Ponant Islands. Far from the continent (particularly those in Finistère), they always seek a certain autonomy to survive “all year round”, and not just in the summer season.

Also, since their recent gathering on the island of Houat (Morbihan), the mayors of the Îles du Ponant, as well as the Association Les Îles du Ponant (AIP)*, have decided to position themselves very clearly in favor of an increase in the housing tax for second homes. “The objective is not to fight against second homes,” says Denis Bredin, president of the AIP, “but to release resources to resolve the increasingly complex problem of year-round housing. »

Ouessant bought houses

The example of Ouessant, in North Finistère, is glaring. “We have year-round jobs to fill, but we no longer have housing to accommodate our workers…” The municipality has already bought more than twenty houses to overcome this problem, and work is underway to develop a handful of apartments very soon. But will this be enough? “Regarding the housing tax on second homes, Ouessant has opted for a tax on the municipal share at 50%; Belle-Île and Bréhat at 60%, adds Denis Bredin. Please note, this is indeed the municipal share of the tax, we are not on the entire tax, far from it. »

No tax base, in short. Impossible to put this system in place. It will therefore be necessary to find other solutions to help finance new housing for the life of these two pretty “stones”.

Since 1971, the Les Îles du Ponant Association (AIP) has brought together elected officials and socio-professional leaders of the Islands: Mayors, Departmental Councilors, Deputies, Senators, representatives of Consular Chambers, Fisheries Committees, Tourist Offices, Transport Companies, local authorities…
