United Auto Workers President Provides Update on Strike Strategy and Urges Members to Join Picket Lines

by time news

United Auto Workers President, Shawn Fain, announced on Friday that the union will not initiate any new walkouts against Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., and Stellantis NV in its strike against selected plants. However, Fain mentioned that the union is changing its strategy and workers can be sent out at any time.

Instead of launching additional walkouts, Fain urged UAW members who are not part of the strike to join their fellow striking workers on the picket lines this Saturday. He emphasized that the picket line holds a significant importance and should be respected as a sacred place.

This update from Fain came on the 29th day of the UAW’s unprecedented simultaneous strike against all three Detroit automakers. The union has been organizing Friday livestreamed events hosted by Fain to keep members informed. This development follows the union’s decision to expand and modify its targeted “Stand Up Strike” by initiating a walkout at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant. This particular plant is not only Ford’s largest but also its most profitable in the world. The addition of 8,700 autoworkers from this plant brings the total number of workers on the picket line to approximately 34,000. It is worth noting that this count does not include ongoing UAW strikes at other employers outside the Detroit Three.

Despite the ongoing strike, contract negotiations are still in progress with all three companies. The negotiations aim to address the concerns and demands of the workers, with the goal of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
