Yesterday, Thursday October 12, the National Rally (RN) took advantage of its parliamentary niche to propose granting political asylum to Julian Assange. However, this proposal was listed in 6th position in a list of 7 proposed laws. The request was therefore not addressed in the hemicycle, due to lack of time.

One sitting day per month, an opposition group decides the agenda of the National Assembly and can include its legislative proposals. This is what we call a parliamentary niche.

The abolition of inclusive writing comes before Julian Assange’s asylum request

The RN had its priorities last night. If some agree, others question. While the question of political asylum for the Australian journalist was on the agenda, it was not mentioned by any MP during the session.

The day of parliamentary debates was primarily organized around the abolition of family allowances for parents of delinquent children, ways to reduce the energy bill of the French and the creation of additional income for student employees. . The RN group also chose to address the question of life adjustments for women with endometriosis and that of the abolition of inclusive writing.

Debating the ban on the use of inclusive writing seemed more urgent to RN elected officials than examining the case of Julian Assange, imprisoned in solitary confinement for more than three and a half years in the high security Belmarsch prison in London. Yesterday’s session stopped while the 5th proposal was being studied, due to lack of time to address the following ones.

“It is extremely shocking that France does not respond to Julian Assange’s requests”

However, on October 4, Jean-Philippe Tanguy, the deputy president of the RN group in the National Assembly, seemed determined to pass the law. He also defended himself against those who accused his political party of showing opportunism with this initiative.

“Marine Le Pen and the various leaders of the RN have long taken positions in favor of welcoming and recognizing Julian Assange’s need for asylum (…) a symbol of how democracies, including our republic, should consider freedom of the press (…)”he explained, and added: “It is extremely shocking that France does not respond to Julian Assange’s requests, especially since the right to asylum is granted to anyone (…).” This, however, did not encourage his group to make this request the priority of the day.

The National Assembly therefore ignores a text proposing refugee status to the founder of WikiLeaks for the second time. In July 2023, Arnaud Le Gall, LFI deputy, tabled the same proposed resolution as that of the RN. This initiative also remained a dead letter.
