As night falls over Jerusalem, Israel’s divided capital, a group of Israeli human rights activists take stock.

Throughout the day, they collected money and donations in kind for the poor Bedouin population in southern Israel, which they say has been hit particularly hard by Hamas attacks.

“We want solidarity for all people here”

Noa Dagoni from Human Rights & Democracy explains: “The needs are enormous. Thousands of people are in panic and believe that no one cares about them. They have no infrastructure, no electricity, no water and no shelter.

For us it is also a statement that we make no distinction between Jews and Arabs. We want solidarity for all the people here who are now suffering from this terrible war.”

“The only thing that keeps us going”

Within a short period of time, hundreds of aid packages were collected for the Bedouin communities. The donations come from Israelis and Palestinians as well as from foreign benefactors, says Noa Dagoni.

“In the last two days, more than 100 people came to volunteer here. And many, many people donated money. We send volunteers to go shopping with this money and then bring what they bought here.

It’s really touching and the only thing that keeps us going. Because otherwise it’s really heartbreaking.”

Euroenws correspondent Valérie Gauriat says the fundraising will continue in the following days if possible. “Just one of the many examples of people trying to help those in need, in whatever way they can.”
