In a breakthrough decision, Wopke Hoekstra, the newly appointed European Commissioner, managed to convince the European Parliament of his forward-thinking approach to nature restoration law. This achievement holds immense significance as Europe strives to combat climate change and protect the environment. However, while such progress is being made, the disruptive tactics employed by Extinction Rebellion activists to protest against the removal of subsidies on fossil fuels continue to cause chaos, as they recently blocked the A12 highway.

The urgency to address climate change and safeguard nature is increasingly felt across Europe. However, amidst all this, a silently unfolding crisis of unprecedented proportions has been devastating communities for decades. Shockingly, more than half of the European population is overweight, and despite the proliferation of lifestyle coaches and diet advice, this trend shows no signs of abating.

Surprisingly, no political party has included this social issue of obesity and its associated health problems in their party manifestos. Moreover, there have been no mass protests demanding action on this front. People with high BMI often find themselves burdened by a sense of personal responsibility, believing it is solely their fault and that they should simply eat less and exercise more. But the efficacy of the former is short-lived, and the latter unfortunately leads to minimal fat burning.

Scientific evidence is mounting, revealing that around 60 percent of our daily food consumption consists of highly processed products packed with calories. The high presence of chemical additives, trans fats, and artificial sugars disrupts our digestive system. These processed foods are specifically designed to cater to our tastes: fatty, sweet, and salty.

Industrial alchemists have mastered the art of creating addictive products that consumers cannot resist. Whether it is chips, pizza, or soft drinks, our brains respond like addicts, producing dopamine that compels us to consume more. Consequently, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and, of course, obesity has skyrocketed, burdening society with exorbitant medical costs.

The temptation to indulge in unhealthy eating is ubiquitous, and it is astounding that not everyone is overweight. Genetic predisposition plays a role, but the fact that over 30 percent of our children are already overweight signals the need for immediate action. It is clear that urgent steps must be taken without delay.

As elections loom, social security emerges as the central issue. The author of this article advocates for a “body rehabilitation law” and urges politicians, regardless of their political affiliations, to address this crisis in the European Parliament. Wopke Hoekstra, with his commendable understanding of progressive initiatives, might prove to be an invaluable guide in this endeavor.

Hanneke Schaafsma, a nutritionist and fasting coach from Leeuwarden, voices her concerns and hopes for comprehensive action on this front. As Europe tackles critical environmental matters, it is vital to recognize the pressing need for addressing the disastrous impact of obesity on society’s well-being.]
