Many of them did not open on Friday, and continue to operate until Monday evening. Liberal general practitioners and specialists are on strike at the call of their unions, to demand a better pricing policy. Around two thirds of liberal practitioners followed the movement according to the inter-union, a participation that varies greatly depending on the territory.

“In Paris the movement is not very followed but in the provinces, a lot has stopped,” assured Philippe Cuq, president of the Bloc (surgeons’ union) and spokesperson for a brand new “inter-union”, which brings together 12 organizations of professionals or future doctors. The trade unionist regrets having had “no news from the ministry or from Health Insurance”.

Unions denounce “political contempt”

The strike is organized by a national inter-union, supported in particular by the six representative unions (Avenir Spé-Le Bloc, CSMF, MG France, FMF, SML, and UFML-S). Everyone wants to defend a profession “at the end of its rope”. The unions denounce a “political contempt” for local medicine, which dissuades young people from setting up and pushes back liberal practice in favor of salaried employment.

The strikers demanded the rapid resumption of price negotiations with Health Insurance, with “real means”. On November 1, an increase of 1.50 euros for the basic consultation will come into force (i.e. 26.50 euros for the general practitioner), but everyone, including the government, recognizes it as insufficient.

The inter-union also criticizes the Valletoux bill, on “access to care through the territorial commitment of professionals”, which will be examined at the end of October in the Senate. Specialists in particular fear that this text will make it possible to force them to be on call, or even to be forced to go and provide cover for them at the public hospital. The Health Insurance budget planned for 2024 is finally considered “largely insufficient” in the face of the crisis facing the health system, between the aging of the population and an exponential shortage of doctors.
