The most listened to artist on streaming platforms for three years, the Puerto Rican Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, has achieved a tour de force. He dethroned the British Ed Sheeran and the Canadian Drake in this place, with songs performed only in Spanish. The former altar boy is the first Latino rapper to top the American charts with two entire albums, The Last Tour of the world et A summer without you, both in the language of Cervantes – even The Bamba (1958), by Ritchie Valens, did not do better. And all while the rapper has given himself a ridiculous name worthy of a Mexican wrestler – Bad Bunny literally meaning “bad rabbit”. The cover of his fifth album, Nobody knows what will happen tomorrowpublished Friday October 13, thus takes on its full meaning, a rider who controls his mount during a rodeo, the sport of gringos par excellence.

Another tour de force for Bad Bunny, he does not win this list with the festive reggaeton of his elders, Daddy Yankee or Don Omar, but with music inspired by Atlanta trap, in its darkest version, close to Travis Scott, with whom he shared the song K-Pop on his latest album Utopia. The young musician has the nerve to challenge his American colleagues on their home turf in Spanish. This is the challenge he once again set for himself on this album of twenty-two pieces, very sad as a whole. Only two titles at the end of the tracklist, black dog et Un previewtake up the typical reggaeton rhythm. «I’m not a trapper, nor a reggaeton player»he introduces himself in this fifth opus.

From the start, as if to drive the point home, Bad Bunny launches into a long six-minute monologue on very solemn violins, where he looks back on his early career in the title Nobody knows (“you don’t know anything”, in French), addressed to his detractors as well as to his new fans who make the mistake of not knowing him from his first pieces: tell them (2016) or his title with the rapper Cardi B and the Colombian J Balvin, I Like it (2018).

It’s a credo, at home, he doesn’t take the easy way out: he takes a stand against the murders of transsexuals, demonstrates against the corruption and homophobia of a governor in Puerto Rico, doesn’t hesitate to dress up in drag queen in her music video I Perreo Alonedefends fluid sexuality. “In twenty years, I will be able to love a man”, he said to Los Angeles Times in 2020. In the meantime, his new girlfriend is the model Kendall Jenner, little sister of the Kardashians, with whom he parades around with Gucci bags.
