“We will not give in to violence,” Élisabeth Borne assured this Saturday, promising teachers that the authorities will be “there to ensure (their) safety”, the day after the death of a teacher stabbed to death by a young man radicalized in Arras.

This new attack caused a shock wave, three years almost to the day after the assassination of Samuel Paty and in a context marked by fears of the conflict between Hamas and Israel being imported into France.

“We will not give in to violence. We will face it and we will fight it,” declared the Prime Minister during a speech given on the occasion of the Samuel Paty Prize award ceremony at the Sorbonne in Paris, named after the beheaded teacher, on 16 October 2020, for showing caricatures of Muhammad during classes on freedom of expression.

After the Arras attack, France went on “emergency attack” alert, the highest level of the Vigipirate system. Up to 7,000 soldiers from Operation Sentinel will be mobilized by Monday evening throughout the country.

“The school is a sanctuary”

“I want to say it to all teachers: we will be there to ensure your safety,” assured Élisabeth Borne. “The school is a sanctuary (…) When a teacher is attacked, it is not only the Republic that is targeted: it is its future that is threatened.”

A minute of silence will be observed in schools in France on Monday at 2 p.m. The school day in middle and high schools will not start until 10 a.m. to allow teachers and staff to “prepare for the resumption of classes”, also indicated the Minister of Education Gabriel Attal, also present at the Sorbonne. .
