The Municipality of Pogoni honored the memory of Epirus Macedonian fighter Pavlos Melas in the established event in Parakalamos, place of origin of the Melas family, where the family tower is preserved.
The event was held in collaboration with the Region of Epirus, in the presence of political, state, military authorities and a large number of people.
At the statue in honor of P. Melas, a memorial service was held followed by the laying of wreaths by the military and state authorities and students of all levels of the school units in the area.
In his greeting, the Regional Governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, spoke about the love of Epirus Macedonians for the homeland and its ideals, referring to historical facts.
The mayor of Pogoni, Kostas Kapsalis, spoke about a great hero, who inspired the Greek nation, emphasizing among other things: “The “lamb of Genus” was one of the three men who set the wheel of history in motion. Pavlos Melas held a special place among the Macedonian fighters, because his death rang the bells of the Genus Resurrection. His tragic death sanctified the Macedonian Struggle and this great hero deserves all honor and glory.”
The main speech was given by the principal of the Parakalamos Primary School, Thomas Dimitriou, interspersed with the recitation of poems by the students of the Parakalamos schools.
