Several actions will be put in place by the Ministry of Sports and the Olympic Games and football authorities to fight against homophobia in stadiums, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Saturday October 14.

AFP has taken note of a letter addressed to professional clubs and selections by Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera, Bérangère Couillard, her colleague in charge of equality between women and men and the fight against discrimination as well as the presidents of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, and of the professional league (LFP), Vincent Labrune.

Dated October 12, the missive details a series of measures that will be carried out ” in the next weeks “ and presented, on December 18, during the plenary session of the National Supporterism Authority.

Among the measures, “the organization of a time for discussion with groups of supporters” with the ambition of “share a diagnosis of facts relating to the field of homophobia”but also try to “to develop certain practices”, by eliminating discriminatory songs “again taken up by historical habit”.

The authorities also plan to set up awareness and training workshops in the fight against discriminations, “for all stakeholders concerned, including club supporter representatives and supporter associations”. It is also planned to designate reference and trained people within the fan groups. “ready to work on this theme in conjunction with local associations, in particular LGBTQ+ centers”.

Sanctions against PSG and Rennes

In recent weeks, several matches in the French championship have been the scene of homophobic chants. The Ligue 1 classic between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Olympique de Marseille (OM) thus gave rise to sanctions from the LFP disciplinary committee: the closure of a stand in the Park of the Princes and a suspended match suspension for four Parisian players.

Stade Rennes, for its part, received a fine of 70,000 euros for similar acts during a match against Nantes on October 1. The interministerial delegate for the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBTQ + hatred (Dilcrah), Olivier Klein, announced on Thursday that he had taken legal action three times on this issue.
