The process will be carried out by TP Uno, made up of judges Gustavo Bernie, Viviana Cukla and Ángel Dejesús Cardozo, while Martín Rau will intervene on behalf of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the accused will have Mario Ramírez as official defender.
The case has Vargas as the only defendant and he faces an accusation for the crime of femicide, a figure that provides for a sentence of life imprisonment if he is found responsible for the act.
Antonella Bernhardt’s crime was recorded on April 4, 2019 and Vargas was filmed by a neighbor while leaving the crime scene.
At first, Judge Fernando Verón, head of the Court of Instruction Three, framed the case as a simple homicide since there was no relationship between the victim and the accused, although after proposals made by both the prosecution and the complaint, the The accusation added the aggravating circumstance of femicide and the resolution was later ratified by the Court of Appeals.
The modification meant a severe setback against Vargas, since under an accusation of simple homicide he faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, while for femicide the future only holds life imprisonment if he is found guilty.
