A tsunami wave hit the largest island in Tonga, Tongtapu, today (Saturday) and reportedly caused heavy flooding in the capital. This, after the underwater volcano, Honga Tonga, erupted yesterday in the South Pacific.

Meanwhile, warnings of further tsunamis were also issued on the North Island of New Zealand, off the west coast of the United States and in British Columbia in Canada. As a result, with the help of the police and the army, many residents who stayed in the lower places were evacuated to higher places.

The first eruption of the volcano, Honga Tonga, occurred last Friday, releasing heavy ash clouds into the air. The second eruption, occurred today, at 5:26 p.m., local time. The Meteorological Service of Australia reported that a 1.2-meter tsunami wave was recorded near Tonga, just four minutes after the eruption. The Tsunami Warning Center said another 2.7-foot tsunami was observed near the American capital, Samoa, Pago Pago.

In addition to the tsunami warning, the Tonga Meteorological Service has issued warnings of heavy flooding, and strong winds near the coast. The nearby island of Fiji also issued a warning, demanding that citizens living in coastal areas “move to a safe place for fear of strong currents and dangerous waves.”
