Around ten people from the Ile-de-France branch of the Extinction Rebellion movement met early in the morning in front of the FFR gates. After pouring the contents of oil cans, they placed rugby balls inside, according to photos and videos uploaded by the group.

“Totally guilty, deceptive polluter, you are going to have a bad time”they shouted in particular, a few hours before the quarter-final between the French team and that of South Africa, Sunday evening, at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis).

“A long tradition of partnership with rugby”

Extinction Rebellion wanted this “denounce the financial support of TotalEnergies, one of the main sponsors of the Rugby World Cup, which is trying to improve its image by exhibiting it in the stadiums”he explained.

In a reaction sent to Agence France-Presse, the company for its part asserts “respect[r] fully have the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression”more “deplores[r] any form of violence, whether verbal, physical or material”.

At the start and during the competition, the French group’s partnership with the Rugby World Cup was also denounced by Greenpeace. On August 30, the non-governmental organization had posted a spectacular video online showing the Saint-Denis enclosure gradually filled with oil, emphasizing that “the fossil fuel industry as a whole produces enough oil to fill a stadium like the Stade de France every three hours and thirty-seven minutes.”
