The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning in Plainfield, southern suburbs of Illinois, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
The horrifying incident unfolded just before 11:40 a.m. when a 32-year-old woman made a panicked 911 call, reporting that her landlord had attacked her with a knife. The victim explained that she had taken refuge in the bathroom and fought vigorously to defend herself against the assailant.
Local law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, which is located in the 16200 block of South Lincoln Highway near Lily Cache Road. Authorities discovered the suspect, 71-year-old Joseph M. Czuba, sitting gravely injured on the ground near the property’s driveway. Czuba, who exhibited a cut on his forehead, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Upon further investigation, deputies found the victims, a 32-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy, both in critical condition with multiple stab wounds to their chest, torso, and arms. Tragically, the child succumbed to his injuries despite being rushed to a local hospital, while the woman remains hospitalized in serious condition. The identities of the victims have not been released.
Authorities recovered a knife at the scene, and after receiving medical clearance, Czuba was taken into custody and transported to the Will County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Complex for questioning. He is now facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two hate crime counts, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Investigators have determined that the suspect targeted the victims based on their Muslim identities and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving Hamas and Israel. Czuba has not provided any statements to detectives regarding his involvement in the attack.
The shocking incident has left the community in disbelief. Neighbors, like Trinity Jasnicka, who has lived in the area for 25 years, expressed their shock and sadness. “I’ve never heard or seen something this tragic happen,” said Jasnicka. “It’s tragic, for sure.”
The Will County Sheriff’s Office has assured the public that there is no immediate threat to their safety. The investigation into this horrific hate crime attack is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist them in delivering justice to the victims and their grieving families.
