Title: Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Thailand, Prompting Urgent Measures

Date: October 11, 2023

Thailand is currently facing its highest outbreak of dengue fever in the past five years, with over 110,809 reported cases and 106 deaths. The alarming statistics have reinforced the urgency for action as dengue fever continues to pose a significant public health problem, placing a burden on economic and social sectors and impacting the quality of life for Thai people.

In response to the crisis, the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health in Bangkok has collaborated with Takeda Thailand and Dengue-zero cooperation partners to raise awareness and promote preventive measures. They have introduced “Ingma,” a Dengue Virtual Influencer, based on data from more than 1.2 million Thai people who have been affected by dengue fever over the past 15 years. The campaign aims to spread hope and reinforce the message that “Dengue fever is closer and more frightening than you think.”

The event, titled “Forwarding Hope from Ingma,” invites Thai people to participate in the fight against dengue fever. It offers five interactive experience zones, including a “Message of Hope Gallery” featuring real experiences from dengue fever victims and “The Last Message from Ing-Ma,” a photo booth that symbolizes the light at the end of the tunnel. Participants can also send good wishes to their loved ones to keep them safe from dengue fever. The campaign emphasizes the importance of surveillance measures, controlling mosquito larvae population, and building immunity.

Dr. Sophon Iamsirithaworn, Deputy Director General of the Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, highlighted the favorable climate of Thailand for the growth of the dengue virus. Due to the current trend of higher dengue fever cases compared to three years ago, the department advises people to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquito larvae by promptly discarding containers and taking steps to prevent mosquito bites regularly. Following the principles of ‘3 Prevents 3 Diseases,’ including keeping houses clear, collecting trash, and closing water containers completely, will aid in reducing the spread of dengue fever.

Chatchart Sitthiphan, the Governor of Bangkok, asserted that public health volunteers across all 50 districts of Bangkok have been working diligently to raise awareness and promote preventive measures against dengue fever. Collaborating with Dengue-zero cooperation partners, they aim to reduce transmission and disease outbreaks, ultimately leading to a decrease in the number of infected individuals. The initiative with Nong Ingma signifies an essential milestone in building collective protection and overcoming dengue fever.

Peter Strible, Managing Director of Takeda (Thailand) Co., Ltd., expressed Takeda’s commitment to improving the quality of life for people globally. Recognizing dengue fever as a significant public health issue in Thailand, Strible stated that over 390 million people worldwide are affected by the disease, with over 96 million experiencing severe illness. Takeda is proud to actively contribute to raising awareness and expanding prevention systems to control outbreaks. By working closely with communities and promoting immunity against dengue fever, Takeda aims to achieve the goal of zero dengue fever in Thailand.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, commonly found in tropical countries. The disease typically spreads during the rainy season and affects individuals of all genders and ages, with children aged 5-14 being the most vulnerable group. Symptoms include high fever, a red rash or blood spots on the body, and a low platelet count. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as dengue fever can lead to shock and death if left untreated.

To prevent dengue fever, individuals are advised to follow disease control measures, such as thoroughly sealing water containers, avoiding stagnant water, and improving the surrounding environment to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Vaccination is also recommended as an additional measure to strengthen immunity. Consultation with healthcare professionals is advised for further guidance on dengue fever vaccination.

In the fight against dengue fever, the collaboration between government agencies, private companies like Takeda, and the proactive participation of communities is essential to lead Thailand towards a dengue-free future.]
