In recent years, Pinkett Smith, known for her role in movies such as “The Matrix Revolutions,” has been candid about the intimate details of her relationship with the Oscar-winning “King Richard” actor.
The latest revelation, shared in Pinkett Smith’s upcoming memoir titled “Worthy,” comes as a shock to many. It reveals that the couple has been “separated” for a staggering seven years. The revelation was made in the wake of Smith publicly calling Pinkett Smith his “wife” while defending her against a Chris Rock joke at the 2022 Oscars. The incident famously concluded with Smith physically confronting Rock on stage.
During a separate interview with People magazine to promote her memoir, Pinkett Smith further clarified that though they are not legally divorced, they have been living apart since 2016.
Smith has once again shown his support for Pinkett Smith, this time making an on-the-record statement to The New York Times, who conducted the interview. The outlet reported that Smith’s awakening came after reading his wife’s memoir, stating that it made him realize her true resilience, cleverness, and compassion. He also acknowledged that emotional blindness often sets in after spending more than half your life with someone, causing one to overlook their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.
The couple, who married in 1997 after Smith divorced actor Sheree Zampino, first met when Pinkett Smith auditioned for a role as Smith’s character’s girlfriend on the 1990s series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” They have two children together, Jaden and Willow Smith.
Through the years, rumors have circulated that the couple practices an open relationship. Pinkett Smith had previously commented on her husband’s independence, stating that she trusts him completely. She affirmed that they have a mature relationship, not an open one. However, rumors continued to persist, culminating in singer August Alsina’s claim in 2020 that Smith had given his blessing for Alsina to have a relationship with Pinkett Smith. Pinkett Smith later clarified that she had an “entanglement” with Alsina during their amicable separation.
Pinkett Smith’s memoir, “Worthy,” is set to be published on Tuesday, October 17th.
