The oldest remember the large drawing boards which decorated the EMT (manual and technical education) rooms, at the college or in the design offices, the Critérium for drawing first lines and the Rotring for finalizing a plan on which odds were written everywhere. You had to be both very meticulous and precise, but also be good with pencil and pen in hand.

While these qualities may still prove necessary, others have taken over over the past ten years among industrial designers. Now we think and design a room with a computer mouse that even looks more like a joystick.

“We put away the boards and drawings for a long time. Very often, they are no longer used than to decorate a design office, recognizes Pascal Vinzio, vice-president of Evolis (a professional industry organization) and head of external affairs for KSB Group (faucets in particular). We put different views on these drawings, on the right, on the left, additional details on purchases and many other elements. But we have moved from 2D to 3D. »

An operational vision

A revolution. It is now in front of a screen that young people entering the profession work. “They have the room before their eyes and we can turn it in all directions to better understand its reality. Before, we had to imagine it. There we see it! », continues the executive.

As a result, the new arrivals have in hand computer files which allow all the calculations to check the performance of a part, its deformation, its mechanical resistance or pressure. A very realistic operational vision. It allows you to know very quickly where you are heading next to realize and produce it.

“Industrial design is everywhere, whether for airplane parts, car parts, computer parts and even a pen,” continues Pascal Vinzio with the same passion. And to continue: “The designer must certainly plan on the final production but also the entire manufacturing process. It’s not the same thing if we go through foundry or machining in a block of material. He must also think about the cost of production and the environmental impact by optimizing the quantity of material and its choice. These are new requirements. Skills and responsibilities are really broadened. The industrial designer is at the heart of the exchanges. He doesn’t stay locked in his office. He is even involved in the entire innovation aspect and constantly searches for new ideas, at the center of the project groups. »

The virtual reality headset is coming

You will have understood, there is no longer any question of remaining alone. It’s real teamwork that awaits industrial designers. They are all the more in demand as the industry is experiencing a real revival. All companies in this sector are looking for young people – or not so young people – to hire.

“We hope to reconcile them with our technical training, industry, and interest them because our professions are not antithetical to ecological subjects”, analyzes for his part Dominique Scaravetti, lecturer at Ensam Bordeaux and deputy director of campus.

What qualities must future candidates possess to integrate the different training courses? “At Arts et Métiers, we train engineers but, in their curriculum, they also go through a phase during which they learn to read plans. This is essential. Now, to become an industrial designer, you go to a vocational high school (STI2D baccalaureate), a BTS, a BUT (ex-DUT), explains the teacher. There are different levels. To succeed, I believe it is essential to be curious about technology, to enjoy observing objects, parts, touching them, dismantling them and reassembling them to understand how they work. So, even if today we mainly use 3D, it allows us to keep one foot in reality, in the concrete because behind it, we must never forget that there are machines that will make them. »

This profession continues to evolve with virtual reality headsets which are now appearing. No doubt: the industrial designer is truly at the cutting edge of new technologies.

It’s up to you: The book “Mechanical Construction and Industrial Drawing”, made up of 44 maxi-sheets, covers the essential elements. The first part is devoted to the representation of reality, the techniques and standards of drawing. The mechanical construction aspect occupies the next part, detailing each type of part, the known technical solutions for each specific need. Finally, a CAD part concludes the book, which presents the basic functions of software that has become essential. Éditions Dunod, 192 pages, 15.50 euros. The site www.cidj.com/metiers/dessinateur-industriel-dessinatrice-industriellepresents the profession and training.
