In a press release, itself broadcast on (…) places at the heart of its actions living well together, respect and the fight against all forms of discrimination and hatred. Faithful to its values, Aix-Marseille University has therefore decided to suspend its activity on X.”

“By withdrawing from the European code of good practices against disinformation and modifying its moderation rules, and science, openness to others and tolerance,” explains the largest French university in terms of number of students (80,000) in a press release.

On her X account, which has 20,800 subscribers, she published institutional news. The university remains present on three other social networks: LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.

After buying Twitter last year, Elon Musk carried out a massive wave of layoffs that decimated the moderation teams. He regularly reaffirms his vision of freedom of expression, refusing any “censorship”, even if he assures that he respects the laws of each country.

In May, Twitter decided to leave the EU code of good practice against online disinformation, a voluntary code launched in 2018 which contains around forty commitments aimed in particular at better cooperating with fact-checkers and depriving advertising sites distributing fake news.

In mid-October, the European Commission announced the opening of an investigation targeting this social network for the alleged dissemination of “false information”, “violent and terrorist content” or “hate speech”, a few days after the start of a war between Israel and Hamas triggered by a bloody attack launched by the Palestinian Islamist movement.

The University of Aix-Marseille is not the first establishment to take this break: this year the University of Rennes 2, Sciences-po Toulouse, Enssib… have also decided to no longer publish on this network.
