The 2023 World Cup is not over yet. Even if in the minds of many, it is already a little with the cruel exit of the XV of France in the quarter-finals of its World Cup on Sunday against the defending champion, South Africa.

If we still have to play semi-finals then the final on October 28, eyes are already on the future, which is four years from now. Designated on May 12, 2022 by World Rugby, it will be Australia’s turn to ignite during the 11th edition of the World Cup.

For Australia, this is not a first. From the first edition in 1987, the Wallabies were chosen jointly with New Zealand to launch the global adventure. The Australians did it again 16 years later, in 2003. But this time, the country was alone in the maneuver. Whether in 1987 or 2003, the Aussies missed the title (4th in 1987 and unfortunate finalist against England). A shame for a nation which has two world crowns (1991, 1999).

This 11th edition takes place from September 10 to October 23, 2023 and we already know the first 12 qualifiers, namely the first three of the four groups of the current world championship (Argentina, South Africa, Japan, Fiji, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Italy without forgetting France and Australia). A World Cup which could also mark the transition from 20 to 24 teams. World Rugby is in any case working on this issue.

In 2031, the rugby world will set foot on the American continent for the first time. The United States will become the 8th nation to host a World Cup, after New Zealand, South Africa, England, Wales, Japan, Australia and France. A way to further confirm the universality of a sport, not yet established everywhere.
