Stanis Bujakera

The Observatory for Press Freedom in Africa (OLPA), an organization for the defense and promotion of press freedom, pleads for the holding of a fair and equitable trial in favor of Stanys Bujakera Tshamala, journalist at Actualite.cd , online media based in Kinshasa, and correspondent for the French and British media Jeune Afrique and Reuters.

During the mobile hearing of the Kinshasa/Gombe High Court at the Makala central prison on October 13, 2023, the Prosecutor’s Office charged the journalist with several complaints including “forgery”, “falsification of the seals of the State”, forgery and use of forgery”, the “propagation of false rumors” and the “transmission of erroneous messages contrary to the law”.

The Stanys Bujakera case registered under RP 29823 was postponed until October 20, 2023 at the request of the journalist’s lawyers in order to prepare their defenses. They also denounced the irregularity of the confirmation of the detention of the journalist whose deadline has largely passed, requesting his provisional release.

These legal proceedings follow the publication by Jeune Afrique, in its edition n°3128 of August 31, 2023, of an article entitled: “Death of Chérubin Okende in the DRC: did military intelligence play a role? “. In this article, the French media published a document attributed to the intelligence services implicating Congolese military intelligence in this assassination.

Stanys Bujakera was arrested on September 8, 2023, at N’djili international airport.

In view of the above, OLPA remains convinced that the principles of the good administration of justice and the right to defense will be preserved by the Tribunal in accordance with the laws of the country and international legal instruments on human rights.
