Russia and the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday after a strike on a hospital in Gaza, blamed by Hamas on Israel, which left at least 200 dead, according to local authorities.

“Russia and the United Arab Emirates requested an urgent public meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the morning of October 18 due to the strike on a hospital in Gaza,” the ambassador said on Telegram Russian deputy to the UN, Dmitri Polianskiï.

IDF accuses Islamic jihad

While the Gaza Strip has been bombarded daily by the Israeli army since October 7, a strike on a hospital in the enclave left hundreds dead on Tuesday. Hamas, in power in this territory, accused the IDF. The Israeli army, for its part, denied being behind it and accused the Palestinian organization of Islamic jihad.

The tragedy led to a wave of protests in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel, where hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, demanding the departure of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The Israeli embassy in Jordan was also targeted after the strike.
