New curriculum and new methodology are needed to renew agricultural education

– said Zoltán Horváth, the director of the József Galamb Mezőgazdasági Technikum in Makó, at the national meeting that was held yesterday at the institution. Professional teachers from all over the country came to the event. At the conference, they presented the textbook that is being prepared, which the institution is developing with grant support and leading an international collaboration. The foreign participants of this cross-border cooperation are the Marosvásárhely faculty of the Sapientia University of Transylvania from Romania, and the Pro Scientia Naturae Foundation from Serbia, and from Hungary the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the iTStudy Hungary Computing Education and Research Center.

The purpose of the course material is to help teachers who have been participating in agricultural vocational training for several decades in the teaching of modern, digital-based agricultural technologies that also use artificial intelligence, above all, knowledge about intelligent greenhouses. One of the first results is that next January, a training for 50 involved teachers will start on four topics – based on their feedback, the textbook available in digital form will be finalized.

At the conference, József Horváth, the director general of the Alföldi Agricultural Vocational Training Center – the Galamb school operates as part of it – spoke, among other things, about how proud he is of the institution in Makó, since the schools mostly only pass on knowledge to their students, but Galamb undertook more than that, in addition to creating knowledge also actively participates.

This is remarkable because this task is mostly undertaken only by institutions of higher education

he drew attention. He added that agricultural technology is changing at a dizzying pace, and education must also adapt to this. However, for this, it is necessary to create the intellectual background for teachers participating in vocational training. The curriculum prepared under the leadership of Makó is also valuable and usable at the international level.

In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sándor Farkas said that agriculture is no longer characterized by the red tractor, the grape picker with the putton, or the cow running from the pasture.

Agriculture has also caught up with high tech. The technology used by Hungarian agriculture is world-class. I usually describe it as: we already use space technology here

– he felt the digital modernization taking place today.

The use of precision farming, automation, robotics, GPS-based systems and drones is already present.

Through these, it is only possible to increase the efficiency of production in such a way that, at the same time, we can take into account the values of the created world, the reduction of the environmental load, and the rational use of resources.

– indicated why developments such as the one currently taking place in Mako are important.
