“Life is nothing if freedom is lost,” is a wise phrase from our distinguished patriot, Don Manuel José Joaquín del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Belgrano. And boy is it. Now that the sublime word freedom is so “fashionable,” it is good to enhance and highlight one of the most important values that truly free beings have. After being abolished in our country, and, yes, in some cases and places only theoretically, all forms of oppression and slavery, freedom is learning and it is also teaching. It is also the freedom to express oneself and the freedom to choose, or not, a religion. It is also to think, criticize, interpret, reflect, choose, respect, decide, travel, know, circulate, reflect, reveal, demand, read, act, know, vote, discern, enjoy, disagree, participate, say, petition, decide, make mistakes, write, erase, study, protest, remain silent, shout, be ironic and also laugh and cry. It is also democracy, autonomy, dignity, self-determination, liberation, will, discernment, privacy and it is also free will and self-realization. So many more terms encompass such a beautiful and esteemed word, that it would be impossible to include them in just one. Let us defend it, value it, protect it, exercise it and demand it, always without deviating from what is permitted and respecting the rights of others, because when it is lost, it only takes on the true dimension of its precious and priceless significance.
