The Port Authority of Tarragona (Spain) has successfully completed a pilot test of the ‘Smart Grid’ system, known as intelligent grid, with the aim of supporting the future energy community at the Costa Pier. This advanced energy system incorporates metering devices, sensors, controls and two-way communication, designed to effectively monitor and manage changing energy demands, with efficient integration of renewable energy sources.

The test was carried out in the current renewable facilities, including the Port Authority administrative building and the Museum (Shelter 2), as well as in the buildings and facilities that are supplied with renewable energy at the Costa Dock. This evaluation allowed the monitoring of energy production and consumption, as well as the realization of a detailed energy balance of each component of the network, even allowing the simulation of renewable energy consumption bills.

It is worth mentioning that the ‘Smart Grid’ represents the key technology to manage the port’s future energy community. For its part, the choice to carry out the test at the Costa Dock is based on the presence of various photovoltaic installations in this area, which suggests an important step towards a more efficient and sustainable energy supply in the port of Tarragona.

Another novelty is that the Port of Tarragona has established its short-term sustainability goals in a conference titled “Port Tarragona Rumbo EcoPort2027: the sustainable future of the Port on the horizon 2027”. This event, organized at the Robert Palace in Barcelona, has been under the general direction of Diffusion of the Department of the Presidency of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
