Time.news – The ‘expensive breakfast’ breaks out in Italy. This is the alarm launched by Assoutenti, which signals patchy price increases for the price lists of coffee, cappuccino and croissants at the bars on the peninsula.

“In recent days we have been receiving numerous reports from consumers who denounce increases in the prices of espresso, but also of cappuccinos and leavened desserts, consumed at the counter or at the tables of bars throughout Italy – explains Assoutenti – Increases in the price lists of a few euro cents, but which are immediately notified by citizens who go to one of the over 160,000 bars in Italy every day “.

According to Assoutenti’s analysis, both Istat and a December recorded an average increase in price lists of + 2.8% for the bar sector, both the trade associations themselves, with Fipe declaring that 76% of bar managers would update their price lists between the end of 2021 and the first part of 2022.

At the base of the increases that are affecting coffee, cappuccino and croissants we find both expensive bills, with record increases in electricity and gas started on 1 January, both the sharp rise in raw materials, with the prices of coffee growing by + 81% in 2021, those of milk by + 60%, those of sugar and cocoa by + 30% – analyzes Assoutenti – higher costs by the merchants who, inevitably, are unloaded on final consumers, and are giving rise to the phenomenon of “expensive breakfast” throughout Italy.

“Every day 5.5 million Italians have breakfast in bars throughout the area, an unmissable appointment whether it is a quick coffee at the counter or a brioche consumed sitting at the table – explains the president Furio Truzzi – a habit that, unfortunately, is becoming more and more expensive: espresso coffee passes in many bars from 1 euro to 1, 10 euros (with an increase of + 10%); the price of cappuccino, which in 2021 was on average around 1.40 euros, has now been raised in many years to 1.50 euros (+ 7.1%). Even sweets are not saved, with croissants, brioches and leavened products which record increases of + 20%, and prices that rise from 1 euro to 1.20 euro “.

And he warns: “Unfortunately we are only at the beginning. If the bill emergency continues in 2022, and in the face of the prices of raw materials still skyrocketing, the classic cup of coffee consumed at the bar could reach a record of € 1.50 during the year, with an increase of + 37.6% over 2021, and a full breakfast could cost as much as 41.6% more, transforming a daily ritual into a luxury for the rich ”, concludes the president of Assoutenti.
