QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a renowned specialist in global analysis of higher education, has released the tenth edition of the “QS World University Rankings: Arab Region 2024”. This year’s ranking, the largest ever, evaluated 223 institutions from 18 member states of the League of Arab States based on global reputation, strength of scientific research, teaching resources, and international relations.

Notably, Gulf universities claimed the top spots in the rankings. King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals emerged as the best university in the region, ascending from its third-place position last year. King Saud University secured the second position, and Qatar University followed closely in third place. King Abdulaziz University, which held the top position for four consecutive years, dropped to fifth place.

Egypt had the highest representation, with 36 of its universities included in the rankings. Saudi Arabia and Iraq closely followed with 34 and 24 universities, respectively. Ben Sutter, Senior Vice President at QS, emphasized the growing profile of the Arab region in academia, attributing it to thriving international partnerships and high-impact research.

Sutter also highlighted the increased number of Arab universities in this year’s rankings, which allows for more informed decision-making by future students, faculty members, and policy-makers. The rankings aim to provide independent and detailed insights, reflecting the region’s competitiveness in pursuing excellence in higher education.

In the top 20 universities, the American University of Beirut secured the fourth position, rising from fifth place in the previous year. The United Arab Emirates University maintained its sixth-place ranking, while Khalifa University of Science and Technology retained the seventh position. The American University of Sharjah climbed to eighth place, and the University of Jordan ascended to ninth place. Sultan Qaboos University dropped to tenth place.

Further down the rankings, the American University in Cairo and Cairo University claimed the 11th and 12th positions, respectively. Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar and Prince Mohammed bin Fahd University in Saudi Arabia secured the 13th place. The Lebanese University ranked 14th, and the University of Sharjah took the 15th place. Jordan University of Science and Technology claimed the 16th position, followed by Ain Shams University of Egypt at 17th place. Umm Al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia, Zayed University in the UAE, the University of Applied Sciences in Bahrain completed the list at 18th, 19th, and 20th positions, respectively.

The rankings also unveiled some notable features of progress in the Arab region. Despite King Abdulaziz University’s decline, Saudi Arabia maintained its dominant position with two universities at the top. Saudi universities excelled in scientific research, international reputation, and collaboration. Moreover, Egypt showcased the highest quality of scientific research, with Cairo University ranking second in academic reputation.

The University of Baghdad remained the best university in Iraq, securing the 43rd position in the region. Jordan stood out for its diverse student body and the largest number of universities in the top 100 for international students. The country also boasted highly trained faculty members.

The United Arab Emirates demonstrated significant improvement, with five universities climbing in the rankings. Morocco stood out for having the highest average score per university in faculty experience, and Sultan Moulay Slimane University ranked second in this category. Qatar University performed exceptionally well in scientific research, while Hamad Bin Khalifa University made an impressive debut, topping the rankings in four indicators.
