Argentine Luciano Benavides became world champion of Cross Country in Morocco

The Argentine Luciano Benavides, with a Husqvarna unit, today won the world motorcycle title in the Raid Cross Country Rally Championship, whose last date took place in Morocco.

The 28-year-old rider from Salta achieved second place in the general classification of the competition and achieved enough units to stay ahead of the Australian Toby Price (KTM), winner of the test in African territory.

Benavides reached 3m. 54s. of the winner, who spent a total accumulated time of 15 hours. 55m. 49s.

“At one point I got lost on the road and I almost had a heart attack until I found it again,” acknowledged the Argentine, who had won the Ruta 40 Challenge, which was carried out along roads in La Rioja, Catamarca and San Juan, among last August and September.

After the five stages of the race, third place belonged to the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla (Honda), 5m away. 08s., while the native of Botswana, Ross Branch (Hero), came fourth, 5m away. 38s.

In automobiles, meanwhile, Orlando Terranova (Hunter) from Mendoza won the last stage, but was behind in the general classification, as did his native Juan Cruz Yacopini (Toyota).

The title was in the hands of the Qatari Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota), while the race was won by the Arab Yazeed Al Rajhi (Toyota).
