New medical research conducted by Klick Labs has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) technology can accurately detect type 2 diabetes in individuals by analyzing their voices for just six to ten seconds. This breakthrough discovery could revolutionize the way healthcare professionals screen for diabetes, removing barriers such as time, travel, and cost associated with traditional detection methods.

The study, published in “Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health,” found that the AI system achieved an impressive 89% accuracy rate for diagnosing women and 86% for diagnosing men. By analyzing over 18,000 vocal recordings from 267 participants, the research team identified more than 14 different acoustic features that differed between individuals with and without type 2 diabetes.

Lead author Jaycee Kaufman stated, “Our research highlights significant vocal variations between individuals with and without Type 2 diabetes and could transform how the medical community screens for diabetes.” Kaufman further added that voice technology has the potential to overcome the current obstacles of time and cost, making screening for diabetes more accessible to all.

Signal processing technologies utilized in the study were able to detect hidden notes of vocal pitch that are imperceptible to the human ear. These hidden sounds provided important clues for accurately identifying individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Klick Labs’ VP and principal investigator, Yan Fossat, emphasized the immense potential of voice technology in healthcare, stating, “Voice technology could revolutionize healthcare practices as an accessible and affordable digital screening tool.” The research team aims to replicate the study and expand the vocal search to include the detection of pre-diabetes, hypertension, and other health conditions.

This groundbreaking development comes shortly after another medical breakthrough at MIT, which introduced a bio-implant capable of seamlessly integrating with the human body to improve drug delivery, particularly for medicines like insulin.
