A few hours after the Transparency Secretariat of the Presidency published a list with 533 candidates who would be disqualified for the regional elections, the Attorney General’s Office announced a process to determine if the head of that entity made a mistake and incurred political participation. .

“The Secretary of Transparency, Andrés Idárraga, is a public official who has to very carefully respect the statements he makes to the public, who performs the function of technical secretary of the morality commission (…) You have to be very careful with that , and those are the elements that we are analyzing for the purposes of having the budgets to know whether or not there was participation in politics,” said the Public Ministry.

According to attorney Margarita Cabello, the report is known at an inopportune time because it arrives after candidate registration closed and just a few days before the elections are held.

“The nice thing would have been if before registration closed, this information could be given and before we were in the process of an electoral process. That has its risks and weaknesses in that information, and we are going to analyze the seriousness of that information,” Cabello said.

The report in question was based on the Secop II public procurement page and the Public Base, where it was found that the 553 applicants had entered into contracts with entities in the previous year.

“This situation makes us think about whether there is a relationship between said hiring and political campaigns,” said Secretary Idárraga, who will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.

The disability report

The surprising report was released by the Transparency Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic and revealed 533 names of candidates who, supposedly, would be disqualified from the elections because they recently entered into contracts with the State, an action prohibited by Law.

Given the suspicion due to the revelation of the report by the Executive and with just over 10 days until the elections, Idárraga explained that his competence only covers reporting this situation and that it will be up to the competent entities to carry out the respective investigations and make decisions.

According to the report, the municipal councils present the most critical panorama, since there is a record of 526 of their candidates at risk of disqualification due to 769 contracts that amount to an amount of $50,170 million.
