Netflix is becoming more expensive: In three countries, the streaming service now costs up to 37 percent more; in Germany, the cheapest tariff without advertising is no longer available.

Who in the future? If you want to watch Netflix without commercial breaks, you will soon have to dig deeper into your pockets. Starting next week, the provider in this country will be canceling the ad-free basic subscription for new customers, which is currently available for 7.99 euros and is the cheapest way to book Netflix after the standard tariff with advertising.

Once the change is active, there will only be three tariffs in Germany: Standard with advertising for 4.99 euros, Standard for 12.99 euros and Premium for 17.99 euros. Translated: The price increase for advertising freedom is a whopping 62 percent.

Netflix unlocks more features for the advertising subscription

After all: With the change, the last tariff in which Netflix only transmits content with the low 720p resolution will disappear. The new minimum is Full HD (1080p). However, if you want to stream with 4K resolution, you inevitably need the premium tariff.

Due to the abolition of the basic tariff, there will soon be a few concessions for the advertising subscription: In November, Netflix also wants to enable downloads with this – this has not been possible so far.

Price increases in several countries – including France

France, the United Kingdom and the United States will see a hefty price increase as a result of the changes. In the USA, prices for the basic subscription will rise from $9.99 to $11.99 and the premium subscription will cost $22.99 instead of $19.99. Netflix does not adjust the standard tariff.

In neighboring France, the offer after the increase is as follows: The basic tariff increases from currently 7.99 to 10.99 euros and the premium subscription will be increased from 17.99 euros to 19.99 euros.

The past shows that Germany will not be spared from many price increases for long. Sooner or later, Netflix will also adjust the tariffs in this country. Netflix last increased its price in February 2021.

By abolishing the basic tariff, Netflix apparently wants to further fuel the flourishing advertising business. The provider recently announced that 30 percent of all new registrations in the so-called “Ads countries” opt for a tariff with advertising. The basic tariff will only be retained by those who have booked it now – it will no longer be available for new customers or returning members who have taken a subscription break in the future.
