Brussels announced on Thursday the opening of an investigation targeting the social networks Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and TikTok. The European Union (EU) is demanding clarification on the measures it is implementing against the dissemination of “false information” and “illegal content” after Hamas attacks against Israel.

The European Commission explained in a press release that it had sent a formal request for information to these two platforms, a week after the launch of a similar procedure targeting X (formerly Twitter) as part of the new European legislation on digital services. (DSA). The social network defended itself by claiming to have deleted or reported “tens of thousands of messages”.

In the process, Meta also defended itself by announcing that it had significantly strengthened the moderation of content posted on its platforms, notably Facebook, and removed hundreds of thousands of messages since the start of the conflict.

The American group assured that it had set up a dedicated unit, made up in particular of people speaking Arabic and Hebrew. “This allows us to more quickly remove content that violates our regulations and guidelines, and provides an additional line of defense against misinformation,” Meta said in a message posted on its site Friday.
