The funeral of Dominique Bernard, a French teacher stabbed to death in front of his middle school by a radicalized former student, took place Thursday, October 19, at Arras Cathedral. Presided over by the Bishop of Arras, Olivier Leborgne, the religious ceremony was broadcast on the big screen on Place des Héros, at the foot of the city’s belfry, in front of several hundred people who came to pay their last respects.

Numerous bouquets of roses had been placed on the square in front of the cathedral, where the coffin was welcomed by around thirty teachers and agents from the Gambetta middle and high school, the scene of the drama.
Dominique Bernard was elevated to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honor by the Presidency of the Republic, according to a decree published Thursday in Official newspaper. The head of state spoke with his family before the ceremony.
His murder on October 13, which occurred almost three years to the day after the assassination of history and geography professor Samuel Paty in the Paris region by a radicalized young man, caused a wave of shock, particularly among teachers.
