The Labor Party United Kingdom have reversed the conservative majority in the country’s by-elections, having won the ward of Tamworth, north of the city of Birmingham, for the first time since 1996. The Labor candidate, Sarah Edwards, has had a narrow margin with her Conservative rival, Andrew Cooper, having obtained 11,719 votes and 10,403 votes, respectively. Participation in these elections has been at 35.9%.

Edwards has assured that Tamworth has “voted for the positive vision” of his party and for “a new beginning”: “They have sent a clear message to (Prime Minister) Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives that they are fed up with this failed government that has collapsed the economy and destroyed our public services,” he declared. “I have made promises to you that I intend to keep. I will be your voice in Westminster and challenge this government to get a better deal for Tamworth. You have my solemn promise. I know many of you have voted Labor for the first time and have not I will disappoint,” he expressed to his supporters.

The leader of the Labor Party, Keir Starmer, after his party’s victory, said that it is “a phenomenal result that shows that the Labor Party is once again at the service of workers and is redesigning the political map.” “For those who have given us their trust, and those who are considering doing so, the Labor Party will spend every day acting in your best interests and focusing on your priorities. The Labor Party will give Britain its future back,” he added.

These by-elections were held following the resignation in September of Conservative MP Chris Pincher, who had been accused of abuse of power after groping two men. The lawmaker claimed that the incidents occurred while he was off duty and therefore acting in his personal capacity.
